On the Ground in Türkiye: Verifying the Çanakkale LFG Project

At Ampere, we are committed to bringing the highest standards of independent verification to carbon projects worldwide, and that commitment takes our team to remarkable places. This time, it brought us to the Çanakkale Landfill Gas Power Plant in Türkiye, a Gold Standard-registered project that is turning what would otherwise be a source of harmful emissions into clean, renewable electricity for the Turkish national grid.

 

The Çanakkale LFG Power Plant, operated by Suez Çanakkale RR Atık Hizmetleri A.Ş. and represented by ST Climate DMCC, captures landfill gas generated by the anaerobic decomposition of municipal solid waste at the Çanakkale Municipal Solid Waste Disposal Site. That gas is then used to power two 1.2 MWe gas engines, with the generated electricity exported directly to the grid, displacing electricity that would otherwise have been produced by fossil fuel power plants.

 

A member of our audit team, Mohammad Tabanjah, led the on-site verification process, supported by our local expert, Burak Demirörs. Together, they conducted a thorough site assessment, verifying SCADA data integrity and flow meter calibration certificates, cross-checking electricity meter readings against official TEIAŞ protocols, and reviewing safeguarding documentation including hazardous waste management records and community grievance mechanisms.

 

Their work on the ground ensures that every credit issued under this project reflects real, measurable, and permanent impact. We are proud to serve as the VVB for projects like this one, projects that demonstrate how responsible waste management and clean energy generation can go hand in hand, driving Türkiye forward on its path toward a low-carbon future.
